Exciting times.

Its been a big month with 2 gold tournaments and a birthday but most exciting of all finally reached top 10.....

I played my first tournament in Brooklyn, New York its such an amazing place a beautiful club in a sweet little neighborhood Ryan and I really enjoyed our time there we had some wonderful billets and all the members of the club were so welcoming.

I had a good first round win over Omneya Abdel Kaawy, i was a bit nervous as she is such a class player last year she was runner up at the World Open so I was very aware of her attacking squash. Happy to come through that match I lost the next game to Jenny Duncalf current world number 2, 3-0. The conditions were hot and Jenny got into the match well early on and i couldn't find my rythym.

Next tournament I faced a Pretty tough challenge, The Us Open in Philadelphia first round against Nicol David. I had only previously played Nicol once before 2 years ago so I was looking forward to a rematch as she beat me 3-0 last time. I managed to start well and play pretty well the whole match a couple of crucial errors on big points and the game was over.

Still a great couple of weeks and happy to come away from them with my ranking now sitting at 10. 2 more big tournaments to go, the world open 1-6th Nov and Hong Kong open 15-20th November. Im training back at my base With Glen in Montreal for the next 3 weeks and looking to improve again.

Something totally off the subject but I am so amazed watching all the rugby world cup happenings back in New Zealand proud to be a Kiwi or what!!!!

Touch base again soon

Hong Kong 01/09/2011

I have Been in Hong Kong for 3 weeks now staying with some family friends from Cambridge( Tony and Cath) and training with all the Hong Kong girls that are in the sports institute. Training has been going really well, they have a very structured programme and spend alot of time on court which is just what I needed. Last night our friends took us out for Dinner to a steakhouse that was 31 floors above the ground, the views were amazing. Hong Kong has really become one of my favourite places to travel to. Later on today we head of to New York for a night (watch a session at the US Open tennis) and then make our way up to Montreal to train with Glen for a few weeks before I start the Carol Weymuller tournament.

The September ranking list came out today and I have moved up to a career high 11, very happy with how my ranking has been climbing, hopefully be in the top 10 seen.

NATIONALS 11/07/2011

Hey everyone just a quick blog to let everyone know whats been happening and whats upcoming.

Have been home now for 2 months and I am always amazed how much more I love coming home everytime, and of course how hard it is to leave again.   Training has been going great working on a few things and playing some of the weekend tournies around NZ.

I have just finished up the New Zealand individual and team event that was held in Hamilton this year. It's our biggest tournament on the NZ calander boasting the biggest and strongest men and women draws.  I'm over the moon to have won the women's open, beating my commonwealth gold medal winning partner Jaclyn Hawkes in the final. It's only my second time winning  the title and of course winning it at home with the support of all my close friends and family something I won't forget. Even my mum turned up and suprised me all the way from Perth. Our waikato team also claimed another team title but now relief to be over 5 hard days of play.

Next up heading out to Malaysia and Singapore on Friday night for 2 Gold events, I'm top qualifier in Malaysia and Play Rachel Grinham in the first round of the main draw in Singapore.I will keep both my website and facebook page updated so everyone can follow the results.

Unexpected Twist 05/06/2011

Well its been a while since my last blog and alot of things have happened in between times.

I am now currently back in NZ, I have been back at training for the last 3 weeks under the careful watch of Jase, things have been going great doing lots of track work 1500's,800's, 400's and 200's also a few longer runs and time trials with lots of weight  circuts and stretching. Its all been going fantastic and am looking forward to the next few months of tournaments.

This month already within New Zealand I've played 4 tournament's,  the most recent was the Wellington Open,Ryan and I had a wicked time down there and got I  some awesome games against the girls and guys .While there  Martin asked me if I would be interested in playing a few exhibitions down South for the week, this is what I call the "unexpected Twist.......

It was a full on week down there we played 3 exhibitions in 6 days giving some of the smaller clubs in the country some entertaining squash taking each game to 5 tight sets,  Martin coming away with the upperhand. We both really enjoyed getting out and about,  getting a real sense of absolute appreciation and excitement for the game.Every Club was AMAZING and took great care of us both so a huge thankyou to everyone who helped out or came down to support the nights.

Back home in Cambridge now after a long week curled up on the couch sipping on a Milo, back to REALITY tommorrow.

Ready to go    16/03/2011

Well after a great 5 week training block i'm starting to get myself ready for the next couple of tournaments on the list. First up is the Atwater Open here in Montreal, hopefully playing at my home away from home courts I will get some great support from all the locals and friends Ryan and I have got to know from the Club Atwater.  I'm third seed in this tournament so to get a great result here would give me some confidence for the next two tournaments.

After the Atwater tournament is Cayman Islands then onto Dallas, looking forward to some MUCH needed sun!!!  We head back to New Zealand straight after Dallas so will be nice to be back home and catch up with everyone.

Anyway will keep the results updated on here and on my facebook page throughtout these next few tournies. Please dont be shy as I've said before if anyone has any questions or just want to say Hi, I love reading anything you send me.

One last thing before I sign off Ryan and I got engaged in December so I am spending my spare time planning our wedding, very exciting times, a wonderful end to an amazing year!!!!!

Good Start to 2011  31/01/2011

2011 has started well for me, making the final in Greenwich was a positive start to the year although I didnt win it I was still very happy to come through 3 tough opponents on the way. I was really mentally and physically a bit flat for the final and Kasey(winner) was on her game and looked very good.

Next up I played in the Cleveland classic, I had 2 qualifying matches and then was drawn to play world number 2 Jenny Duncalf. This was the first time I have played her and although I lost I still think there were positives to come out of the game. I had my opportunities in the 2nd and 4th game which I let slip.

Six weeks until my next tournament so I will hopefully get some good training in and be raring to go come mid March.

New York,New York 19/01/2011

I have been in Montreal training with Glen for 3 weeks and have finally arrived in New York to play my first tournament on the 20th of Jan. Arriving in Montreal on the 30 th of December to -17 degrees Celsius was a major shock to my body. It took me a few days to get used to the cold. I plan on being in Montreal until the middle of April, I enjoy the training environment at the Atwater club and training with Glen each day is really good for me.

Im looking forward to playing my first tournament of the year aftrer having a pretty big year last year it was nice to have the month of December off and back home in Cambridge but now a definately chomping at the bit to play.

We will keep the web updated and you can check out the link under the playing schedule to see the draws and how i'm doing.

Finally a few Weeks break  06/12/2010

Finally I get to have a break and enjoy some of the nice summer weather and get to do some normal things that people do like go to the beach, have BBQ,s and so on. The last 3 months has been full on firstly with the Commonwealth Games, then with 2 tournaments in Hong Kong and Qatar and finally finishing with the Womans Teams event in Palmerston North. Our NZ team ended up finishing 4th which was ok, we had our chance to beat England in the Semi Final but I just couldnt finish off a 2 games to 0 lead and went down in 5. Palmerston North really did themselves and NZ proud, the tournament ran smoothly and all the teams really had a good time. A big thanks to Grant and his team down there. Our closing dinner was very sad, we had a few players announce there retirement with our own Shelley Kitchen  being one of the players, Shelley was very emotional during her speech and brought a tear to most of our team. Shelley has been a great role model for squash and hopefully the rest of us in the team can continue to be good ambassadors for squash in NZ.

Im happy to finish the year with a career high ranking and looking forward to next year.

Take care eveyone merry xmas and happy new year!!!!

Womans World Open and Commonwealth Games  15/09/2010

Two days of flying and I have finally arrived in Egypt ready to play the World Open. There is such a big time difference between NZ and Egypt so I generally try and have 3 or 4 days where I can recover from jetlag.

My first game is on the 18th so I will play a few practice games on the all glass court, and try get used to it.Each court is diferent, some are quicker than others, some bounce more and some are easier to see the ball than others, so I will be working out the court in the next few days.

I have added a link in the PLAYING SCHEDULE tag so everyone can follow my progress.                                                     On the 22nd I head to Singapore where I will meet up with the NZ squash team, we are based there for a few days and then head to Delhi on the 1st of October. Follow the games on the link under my PLAYING SCHEDULE, or hopefully you will be able to watch our games on Sky TV.

NZ Nationals  03/09/2010

Winning nationals was a dream come true, being the best female squash player in NZ its something that as a junior I always wanted to do.

This was one of my short term goals and achieving this makes all the hard training so worth it. I hope there will be many more National titles to come.

WAIKATO OPEN

I have entered to play in the Waikato Open (30/04 - 01/05) which is held at Hamilton Club. Every year I enjoy playing this tournament because I get lots of support being at my home club. I am playing in both the mens and womens draw so I think I have to play 9 games over the 3 days, which should be a nice test to see how I perform when my body is tired. If your in Hamilton pop in and have a watch and catch up.

Jo-l

HOLIDAYS OVER.

After a week off upon returning home its right back to work today!!!Next training phase begins with Jase,my next international tournament wont be until June/July looking forward to competing in some local tournaments and beginning the build up for Commonwealth Games.Look forward to catching up with everyone very soon.

BACK IN CAMBRIDGE 2010

After not playing a tournament for the whole of March I managed to get some really good training in with Glen, so when the Champion Fibreglass Texas Open eventually started on the 8th of April I was fresh and just eager to play a tournament. My first round match was against Tania Bailey which I won 3 - 0, next was Donna Urquart, I won 3 - 0, I played Dominique Lloyd Water next and won 3 - 1 setting up a final clash against Rachael Grinham. I played her last year in the NZ Open and managed to beat her, so I had some confidence going into the match. Beating someone for the first time is always nice, but to beat them twice in a row is more special and especially when its to win a tournament. Ryan and myself arrived back into NZ on the 16th of April after being away for nearly 6 months, it was so good to see everyone again, my mum and nan and my little brother picked us up from the airport. Ive now had 4 days off and start training on Monday again(19th), we have lots of Doubles camps starting in Aucklaand, in preparation for the commonwealth games. I also plan to play as many of the local tournaments as possible, so hopefully get to see more friends  over the next few weeks.

NORTH AMERICA 2010

Well we arrivd in Montreal after a 3 week stay in South Africa, it was a huge shock to the system leaving 30 degree heat to -17 degrees in Canada. It didnt take long to get used to it though and now after 2 weeks we have learned to wear 3 layers at least. We are currently in Greenwich about an hour out of New York and getting ready to play my first tournament of the year, the Greenwhich Open. Starting on the 19th of Jan. I have been hitting alot with Glen Wilson from NZ who is living in Montreal at the moment, he is amazing to work with and has a way to get me thinking about what im doing on court and has helped alot with a few small adjustments in my game.

We are going to be based with Glen for the next few months, so he can help me and also it makes it much easier to travel around to the tournaments in North America. Montreal is very French and most people there speak French as there 1st language, so most of the time Ryan and I have no idea what people are saying to us and what they asking us. We away for 2 weeks now though, from Greenwhich we go to Cleveland for the Burning River Classic and then back to Montreal for a few weeks before we off again to Dayton for the Dayton Open.

We have been away from NZ since the End of October now so Im missing everyone back home, my Family, the crew and everyone in my club back in Hamilton, Oh well only 3 months to go. Ha Ha. Keep an eye out for my results.

End of the year

After a rather hectic year am now having a bit of a chance to relax before the New Year.

Still training of course but also holidaying in South Africa with Ryans family. Its my first time here and what an amazing place very similar to the New Zealand lifestyle weather is amazing and lapping up some great tanning time before we take off from here to a freezing cold Montreal.

We ventured to my first safari last weekend and what a beautiful place the whole town was about the animals. In the game reserve we saw alot Rhino buffalo and even Cheetahs which are very rare to see-not bad for my first time hehe.

Not much else to repot pretty quiet for the rest of the year loooking forward to a brand new season hopefully can carry over some more great success.

Merry Xmas and happy New Year to everyone feel free to keep in touch any time I love reading the emails from you all.

RELAXING TIME-26/08/09

After a very busy couple of months i now have the wonderful month of september to train and be back home before another stint of tournaments.

As I wrote in my last blog the NZ Open was held at the mount from the 11th of August which was a wonderful spectacle and pretty successful for my first GOLD STAR tournament. Before the main draw I had to get through a tough qualifying draw where i first met young up and coming NZ Junior Lana Harrison and then had a tough match with Donna Urqhart of Australia. The game was tense its quite alot of  pressure playing for those final spots in the main draw with everything on the line points, money and a chance to play the top players in the world.I got throught that tough match and knew it was gonna be another BIG step up for the next game!!!I drew Rachel Grinham current number 4 and ex world champion which seems pretty scary i know but I was able to win and even in 3 straight games which i was absolutely exstatic about and best of all i could do it in front of my friends family and massive support crew that came over from Hamilton and all around the place to support me.

After such an exciting time at the NZ Open I knew it was gonna be a tough ask to get back up for the Nationals but tried to put up my best effort.Things went according to seedings and I was beaten by Jackie Hawkes in the final in 4.She played well and was up for the match i was feeling a little flat but my best efforts on the day just weren't good enough. My time will come sooner rather then later I hope but I am so pleased with all the progress I've made along with my awesome team this year.

Coming up Ryan and I head to Hong Kong in October for the Hong KOng Open which is another bugg tournament so really excited bout that and looking forward to matching up against some more top players.

Will keep updating while away so look out for the results and feel free to email me anytime address is on Sponsors Page.

3's a strike.

Wow what a month it has been for me winning the NSW the VICTORIA and now the AUSTRLIAN OPEN'S.

It feels nice to get some great results after alot of hard work, sometimes it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel but a win like this makes everything worth while!!!!

My confidence was sky high after wiinning the 2 smaller tournaments (NSW and VIC Open) and put me in good stead for the AUSTRALIAN OPEN.I knew it would be tough to win having to meet class players such as Lisa Camelleri,Kasey Brown and Annie Au but very POSSIBLE.

Now im looking forward to the NZ Open happening 12th-18th August At Bayfair Mall. I get another chance to play so more top players in the world and see how i measure up.

Thanks for all the emails and texts of support I recieved hopefully i'll get to catch up with you all soon.

Aussie open here we come

After months of good training with Jason(fitness Trainer) and some good time on court I am feeling really good about the Australian Open. I Finally feel like I am getting to the level of fitness that I need to be at to compete at the top level.

I have have some good results sofar this year, winning most of the local tournaments. The NSW Open and the Vic Open where both good results for me, I was really pleased to win both those.

I must thank Leilani's mum and dad who looked after me at both tournaments and I think they will be coming to support me in Adelaide. While staying with them in Sydney they got me onto Xango, which is a health drink that helps your body and immune system. GIVE IT A TRY.

FEELING GOOD-25/02/2009

After my scare of going into hospital im now back on track fully fit and healthy and into some awesome training.I"ve been back training for a while now and am looking forward to flying to Malaysia to compete in some tournaments.

I have made many changes over the last few weeks one of them having my new trainer come on board Jason Wheadon (SWEAT GYM)who is one of the newest memberss of my wonderful support team.Jase is a great guy and amazing trainer and has been pushing me through barriers I didn't know were possible until I started working with him!!!!Enjoying that and also hitting with Anthony Ricketts aswel as Leilani Joyce she is helping me in ways I could never thank her enough for!!!!

Whilst this Friday i fly to Malaysia I will be competeing in 3 tournaments in total hopefully the small local tournaments I have been playing here in NZ have put me in good form going away. The First tournament is very strong and will set me up with great competition for the rest of the tournaments,I am due to play Rebecca Chui (world Number 13) in the first round of qualifying which will be extremely tough but never say never im looking foward to putting all this tough training into practice!!!

After a beautiful summer home here in NZ and wonderful time spent with Ryan and the Family im ready for another stint of 3 weeks away and ready to bring home the Bacon!!!hahaha

I will be keeping a post of matches so keep an eye on the site!!!

HOME SWEET HOME-11/01/09

Its so good to be home after a long 6 weeks on the road,I was meant to head to India after Egypt but after another terrorist attack in Mumbai it was said to be to dangerous for us to travel to Chennai and the World Doubles tournament was called off.

After a rusty start the trip it ended well and i was playing some good squash and even improved my World Ranking to a new high of 45..yay!!!.

I had planned to be home for Xmas and New year to then head to the states for a few tournaments but due to sickness and a night in hospital I made a decision to stay back and get healthy for the long season ahead!!!

During January and February I plan to play a few local tournaments (which i will update onto my schedule page) before heading away to my first WISPA tournament of the new year th CIMB Malaysian Open in Early March.

EGYPT-11/01/09

Red Sea

We arrived in Egypt on the 25th Decmeber, after a nightmare flight through Bangkok,Thailand(we were held in the airport for 12 hours because of bomb scare)we made it safely through.I was still like i said in an earlier post wondering how different my experience this time in Egypt would be compared to my previous one 6 years earlier.Instantly, through the airport doors the sun was burnin g diferent smells, cars beeping and jammed i knew this was going to be a....lets say interesting 2 weeks ahead!!!!

The squash at the World Womens Team Event was awesome with alot of the top 10 players taking part and some long tough matches. We ended up 1 place below our seeding at 4 which is hard as your always trying to finish above it but on a good note my own individual performance was enough to keep me smiling acouple of good wins and even a win over Delia who i had lost to the week earlier in Hong Kong. After the World Womens i headed out to the Red Sea resort called sharm el Sheik For another tournament it was amazing!!!The resort was beautiful hard to be somewhere like that and play squash but i managed to have a pretty successful tournament almost taking out the top seed (currently number 3 in the world)Rachel Grinham. After the loss on the 1st round i still had 6 days in this beautiful resort till i flew home to NZ so i made the most of it!!!Sun bathing on big boats by the beach and pool and bartering at the markets by night i had a great time but was now defiantley ready to get home to Ryan and the family and back to my idea of normality!!!!

Always An Upside - 30/08/2008

Injuries are never fun but sometimes they are a blessing in disguise...Since injurying my Hamstring it has given me time to take my foot off the pedal ,sit back and finally think about whats next for me.

Nationals at Remuera still bumbed to miss it but mum and I decided we would head up anyway and show support both for the tournament and also my peers who i travel and train with.

After watching some good squash we headed to the final dinner and what a nice suprise i was announced (crutches and all) in the NZ Womens team to travel to Egypt later this year.YAY.I travelled to Egypt when i was 14 and totally oblivious to everything at that age Egypt was the trip of a lifetime so it will be interesting to see if my feeelings are the same going back a bit older and wiser.(cough cough)

Also another couple of big things happening in my squash life i have moved up 3 places to a career high of 52 in the world rankings and have also been announced in the NZ doubles team to compete in the world doubles championships in Chennai this coming December.

A pretty good end to the month after a bit of bad luck during the middle im looking forward to gettin back in to training for the month of september before heading off to play some more overseas tournaments.

Bummer - 22/08/2008

One week out from the NZ Nationals and in final prep, I injured myself during a training session. At first I thought it was a torn hamstring but now it maybe a overstetched muscle. Either way, I'm not able to play for at least 4 weeks and will miss the NZ Nationals for the fourth time in four consecutive years.

Always learning - 6/08/2008

Although I thought I played well, but lost against the Aussie top seed, in the first game at the Mt Maunganui Tournament last weekend, I’ve realised that I can’t expect myself to peak twice within a week, so as always, there’s lessons to be learnt.

Playing in the glass back court in the middle of the Bay View mall was awesome though and I hope more young people will consider having a go, like I did many moons ago. LOL!

I now have to prepare for the NZ National Champs in a couple of weeks with a doubles camp this weekend and that should cap a very intense August. Jo'L

Rapt to reach semis - 3/08/2008

Although I lost in 3 to top seed, Kasey Brown, yesterday, I was rapt to be in a semi final spot and quite satisfied with the fact I shot to a 7-1 lead in the second game. Holding on to leads like that gives me more to work on and more to challenge next time around. Now its time to head home, catch up with my grandad who had a birthday while I was away and to prepare for the WIPSE tournament at the Mount next weekend. Jo'L

Whew! - 2/08/2008

After being one game down, I managed to beat the 4th seed from Hong Kong - shes ranked 33 so I caused a bit of an upset - well thats what one news report said.I'm pretty stoked though and have a tough one this arvo when I face the top seed, so I better get psyched for that - catch ya! Jo'L

Australian Open - 1/08/2008

Sorry Folks! Its been a couple of weeks since this website thing went live and I think it will take a bit of time before I really get into the swing of updating on a regular basis. I'm currently in Adelaide playing in the Australian Open. I won in 3 yesterday (July 30) against a chick from England, so today I'm playing for the quarter finals . I hear I am missing out on the rough stormy weather in NZ at the moment - Eeek! If you want to leave me a message, please email me: message@joelleking.com I will definitely try and respond but its probably wise that I don't make any promises I might not be able to keep huh! Thanks for dropping by anyway. Jo'L

Website Live - 17/07/2008

Today my new website was launched.
